The Terra Cotta Pig Grill is Back!
Let me start with some brief background…
Several years ago I came across this adorable little terra cotta pig grill at Cost Plus World Market (yes, even a caveman can find things adorable). I just had to have one. After going through several boxes of cracked ones (they weren't built that well) I found a good one and took him home. I just had visions of my kids cooking alongside their papa on their own little cute pig grill in a few years.
Well, I wrote up the pig grill on my website and an amazing thing happened. I literally got more emails over the ensuing years about that little pig grill than anything else on my website! Hundreds, literally, of people saying "That pig grill is so amazing! Where did you get it!" Well, unfortunately, shortly after I bought mine they were gone from the market. Cost Plus World Market no longer had them in their stores or online. I don't know what happened behind the scenes but I have to assume that either their supplier went away or they stopped buying them because they got too many returns or complaints. Like I said, they were rather fragile and even in the store the boxes were full of already broken grills. I can't imagine Cost Plus wanted to put up with that for long!
Well, now, several years later, its back! And its improved! Thanks to some of my readers I was informed that the terra cotta pig grill is being carried at Cost Plus again both in stores and online. I had to see for myself so I went into a store recently and sure enough, there were the little piglets. But there have been some changes. Rather than the flimsy charcoal grate at the bottom that didn't allow very good air circulation in the previous model, the charcoal holding grate has been incorporated into the terra cotta, and closer to the grill so you need less coals to get good heat at the level of your cooking grate. Second, the things look and feel to be a huge improvement in durability! The terra cotta is noticeably thicker, heavier and more solid. I still wouldn't recommend taking a hammer to it but I didn't see any broken-in-the-box pigs like last time.
So get em while they are available! I assume they are available in most stores but they are also listed online on the Cost Plus World Market website. Please note that these are pretty tiny, only big enough to fit one medium to large steak or a couple burgers. Perfect for a single person or a couple that doesn't have a huge appetite, but not big enough to cook for a crowd.
You are welcome!
I'm Releasing a Book!
Well, an eBook anyway, but whats the difference, right?
Thats right, I'm putting a ton of my knowledge, know-how and heart and soul into my first book titled "Becoming a Grilling Master: 10 Steps to the Shaolin Temple of the Grilling Guru". Each chapter brings you further on your quest to grilling enlightenment, one step at a time.
This book covers all the basics of grilling, from choosing a grill, fuel choices and getting your grill hot, on up through cooking the best darn food this side of nirvana. While those who are new to grilling have the most to potentially learn, experienced grillers might be surprised at how many ways there are to refine your grilling knowledge and execution. Now you can have all that info and how-to instructions in one easy to access source.
Whether for your own library or a gift, "Becoming a Grilling Master" is a great introduction and general resource for learning to cook with fire. In addition to the tons of original photos and how-to instructions contained within the book, purchasing the book will give you access to a growing caché of exclusive online content only available with purchase.
I am still a few months off from making this eBook available to the public, but I am starting to take advanced orders. If you think you might be interested in the book or would like further information about the book simply reply to this email or contact me. I will put your name on a list of those interested and you'll be the first to be informed when the official release date is set!
Cheers and happy grilling!
Don't forget to stock up for the summer on all your grill and fire pit related supplies!
Here are a few places you should check out that have a great selection of "cooking with fire" related items:
SpitJack is a great online retailer that sells all sorts of tools for food & fire. They have all the basics like fireplace tools, wood storage and fire pits. But what makes them really special is that they have hard to find fireplace cooking items like fireplace grills and fireplace rotisseries! They also have big outdoor rotisseries for next spring or summer's pig roast.
The Fire Pit Shop has dozens of choices of fire pits and outdoor chimneys. Get warm this winter with a nice outdoor fire pit to cozy up next to!
Grills Direct stocks virtually every major brand of grills, barbecues, fryers and smokers. While it's probably too cold in most areas to grill right now, this can be a great source for gifts for your grill loving friends and relatives.
